Our Promise: ‘This Is the School Where Everyone Learns to Succeed’
‘Attitudes to learning, behaviour in lessons and conduct around the school environment are exemplary. The quality of teaching and learning has improved over time and pupils’ outcomes in reading, writing and mathematics at the end of key stage 2 have been excellent and in the top 20% of schools nationally for the last three years. ’ – Ofsted report – May 2019.
We are building a reputation for positively involving the children in taking responsibility: for themselves, their learning and their environment.
Our school is full, with 425 children on roll, the age range is 4-11 years as our feeder nursery is a separate school – Canterbury Nursery School and Children’s Centre. We are a successful two-form entry school and have twelve age-group based classes. We also have a Key Stage One School Led Resource Provision, which caters for the needs of children with generic complex needs.
Built in 1961, our school has had a series of structural improvements and is in excellent condition, with a central hall, three groups of classrooms and a staff facilities wing.
Our new extension opened in January 2013 to provide more additional classrooms, and a larger visitors’ entrance and offices. Our high quality, new Library is being used for wider reading within and beyond the classroom. Our well-developed IT Hub enhances our IT and computing provision, making digital learning fun and exciting. We have a large Early Learning Outdoor area and a multi-purpose sports pitch, outdoor classroom, stage and ‘Trim-Trail’.
We are proud to serve the Canterbury housing estate, and we support our families and children by working closely with our community, national and international schools, and other agencies. Canterbury has a diverse population; 78% of our learners are from ethnic minority groups; many of our White British families have Irish and Scottish relatives and around 60% of our learners are Muslims, mainly of Pakistani origin, with a number of Eastern European and mixed race children. We also have several African and Caribbean, Kosovan and Iraqi families. Some other languages children speak are Mirpuri Punjabi, Urdu, French, Hindko, Arabic, Kurdish, Polish, Latvian and Slovak. Our Community Team work closely with families. Attendance, which is at around 95%, is strongly encouraged. Our doors open at 8:45 am daily and home time is at 3:15pm. There are before school Breakfast and Learning Clubs, and many after school activities.
